Early recognition of a foal at risk and better nursing care have increased the survival rates of foals that require neonatal care. The success of improved neonatal care also has increased the need for accurate diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal and urinary apparatus disorders. The primary indications for abdominal procedures in foals include those presenting for acute or chronic colic, ruptured bladder, or umbilical remnant infection. Uroperitoneum is observed with bladder, urachus or seldom with ureteral rupture. Bladder rupture probably occurs during foaling but symptoms are hardly recognised before the foals is three days old. Umbilical abscesses may involve different structures. Clinical signs are mainly recognised between 1 and 5 weeks and ultrasound examination of the regions recommended to localised the problem and plan the surgical approach to be used. Abdominal surgery can be successful; however, the surgeon must be mindful of the complex nature of the medical conditions of foals and maintain adequate supportive and treatment measures slightly different than in the adult horse or older foal undergoing abdominal surgery.
